What Being Late Says About You and How It can Hold You Back

If you ask employers what irritates them about some of their employees, most of them will most certainly name tardiness and it will be at the top of the list. Being chronically late has a very negative impact on your career and makes you look unprofessional.
According to, Chrissy Scivicque, a career coach and corporate trainer, people who are late are perceived as selfish, disrespectful, unreliable and disorganized.
Scivicque argues that even if you are none of those things, you are stilled perceived as being that way and will be treated accordingly. Both your co-workers and your superiors notice when you’re habitually late and it can create animosity because they feel disrespected and put upon.
The question then, is how do you alter this behavior? The key is finding out what causes your tardiness and then eliminating the causes.
The following are 5 common reasons for tardiness, cited by Scivicque, and how to overcome them:
Getting in the zone

Some people just get really focused on what they are doing that they forget about everything else. In order to avoid being late for this reason, it is a good idea to set an alarm or timer to remind yourself when to stop and go for a meeting or appointment.
Miscalculating
Some people are just not aware how long it takes to stand in line for coffee or how much traffic delays a short trip. In order to overcome this reason for being late, it is a good idea to time yourself when doing routine tasks so that you know how long they will typically take. If you do this regularly, you will be less likely to miscalculate your schedule and be ate.
Not Planning
If you’re one of those people who has a chaotic morning everyday, looking for what to wear and not knowing where your keys are, then it is quite possible that if you started planning more, you would not be late. You might want to pick your outfit the day before and have a specific place to put your keys, for example. They key is to plan ahead so that you’re not caught in a mad rush in the morning.
Overbooking yourself
It is quite possible that you are constantly late because you just have too much going on. Maybe you spend your life running from one appointment to the next. To overcome this, you need to plan for some breathing room in between your daily activities and also plan for delays.
Being addicted to the rush

Maybe you’re an adrenaline junkie. If so, then you enjoy working under pressure and may even find yourself waiting until the last minute to do things or go places. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, you must recognize that you’re negatively impacting your career and your reputation and put an end to the behavior.
